Andrews Forest Committee

Present: Sam Pratt, Dan Wolfson, Ian Stokes, Brad Elliot, Julian Portilla, Jim Cochran, Wright Preston

Review of minutes June 23rd : line 66 is incomplete.

add, devoted to continuing review of the MP2 draft

Unanimous approval

General updates:

  • Brush hogging on Urbanik to clear the overgrown intersection. Brush hogger is unknown
  • Brad worked on clearing the kiosk
  • Jim Cochran has installed the sign in sheet at the kiosk
  • The RFP for plan writer has been submitted to town authorities
  • Discussion with Virginia Clarke: if there are trails built on public land, town would need to include permits.   After Town Plan, Town will likely develop a zoning ordinance with more formal trail development plan that defines trails and what kinds of regulations are necessary for building. Likely not until mid or late 2026

Discussion of recreation section of the MP

  • Maintain focus on content rather than format.
    • Discussion of 3rd objective: committee doesn’t have jurisdiction beyond forest boundaries. Suggestion is to change “protect” to “be mindful of”. Committee agrees.
  • Discussion of gradients on objective that starts with “protect soils”. Discussion around whether to include 20% or not. Line 52 specifies trails.  Trails are likely to be discussed in recreation section.
    • Suggestion is to end the sentence at “soil disturbances”. Committee agrees.
    • “Monitor trails and logging roads for damage and erosion.”  Eliminate.

Further notes on changes to the MP were taken by Sam Pratt

Next meeting July 28th.

  • Electing a chair or co-chair for the committee should be the first order of business.
  • Adjourn at 847.
